Programs and Services

The USO of Hampton Roads has Centers throughout the area specifically designed to offer support and service to the military and their families in Southeast Virginia through Information and Referral, Quality of Life, and Family Outreach Programs.

These service centers are the backbone of the USO of Hampton Roads. Each center is responsible for developing center activities, and works closely with the Administrative Office to provide a wide variety of assistance and outreach to fit the needs of military members and their families. Below is a list of some program activities and events we offer:

Please check our calendar for specific dates and times for each program.

Information and Referral –
USO of Hampton Roads provides a link between the military and civilian community. Information services are available and provide: community welcome packets, maps, travel brochures, cultural information, entertainment, hotel/motel and restaurant listings, social service programs, as well as information on all local services and programs offered by the surrounding military installations. USO also provides referrals and follow-up services for those needing future assistance.

Mobile Outreach –
Staff and volunteers visit community events, shopping centers, military bases, and other locations on request, to provide and distribute information about USOHR programs and services and other Hampton Roads family-support agencies.

Orientation –
USO of Hampton Roads regularly attends military orientations for personnel reporting to local military installations.

USOHR Website –
The USOHR website is a valuable resource that provides information to the military and local community about USO programs and services. The website also highlights the monthly newsletter that provides updates, center activities, and military specials and recognizes individuals and organizations for their support of the USO. Individuals interested in volunteering with the USO of Hampton Roads can visit the website to fill out an online volunteer application form.

Flightline Canteen –
USO of Hampton Roads operates a “Flightline Canteen” at Langley Air Force Base and out of our AMC Terminal Center for all local military deploying in support of overseas operations. Military members are treated to warm smiles, goodies and USO Care Packages which contain prepaid international phone cards, snacks, sunscreen, disposable cameras, toiletries, compact discs and other items requested by service men and women.

Military Appreciation Day at The Virginia Zoo -
As part of the yearly Fleet Week festivities in Hampton Roads, USOHR and the Virginia Zoo honor all active duty military and their families by providing free admission to the Zoo, children’s games, inflatable rides and military demonstrations.

USO Holiday Party -
The USO of Hampton Roads hosts an annual holiday party and provides food, games, and entertainment for all military families in the Hampton Roads area. Family members of deployed military personnel have the opportunity to record video messages to loved ones after the show. The recorded messages are sent on video to bring comfort and a piece of home to deployed units overseas.

United Way Day of Caring -
The kick off day for the United Way/CFC Campaign brings the USO together with the community to help those in need. Each year the USOHR staff and volunteers spend the day with patients at the local VA Hospital in Hampton hosting a picnic, playing games and providing entertainment to bring a “touch of home” to those who once served this great nation.

Adopt-A-Serviceperson -
For over 18 years the USO of Hampton Roads has offered the “Adopt-A-Serviceperson” program during Thanksgiving to provide a “home for the holiday” atmosphere for single soldiers who cannot be with their loved ones during this time of year. This USO program pairs host families throughout Hampton Roads with single military service personnel to spend Thanksgiving Day together.

Operation Holiday Spirit -
Each December the USOHR assists local military families who are facing difficult times. Families are referred to the USO by the service member’s command, Military Family Support Centers, or outside agencies and are often low ranking, single parents, or have children with special needs. These families are then “adopted” by local individuals and organizations who buy gifts and food to help these families have a happy holiday season.

USO Emergency Lodging –
With the generous support of private hotels/motels in the area, short-term lodging may be provided for military members and their families on an emergency basis.

Exceptional Family Member Day -
Each year the USO and Paramount’s Kings Dominion offers a day of fun for military families who have children with serious or life threatening illnesses and children who are wheelchair bound. Through the USO and the parks’ staff, with the support of the Joint Military Exceptional Family Member Committee, arrangements are made for free admission into the Park, medical staff to be on hand, handicap accessibility to rides and a group picnic.

Fort Eustis Spouse Appreciation Day
Each spring the USO sponsors a spouse appreciation day at Ft. Eustis. The event is a carnival-like atmosphere with plenty of food and fun.

Kids Day at Ft. Monroe -
Kid’s Day is an annual event that takes place each August at Ft. Monroe to celebrate being a military dependent child. The day is centered on children’s activities and includes games, face painting, rides, and free food. USO of Hampton Roads is a proud sponsor of this Ft. Monroe event.

USO Support Groups -
USOHR Affiliate Location Centers provide a safe place for Family Support Groups to host meetings and activities. Currently, the USO Affiliate Location Centers at the AMC Terminal, Ft. Eustis and Little Creek host meetings for over 20 support groups. In addition to providing a location for these meetings, USOHR Affiliate Location Center Directors are frequent guest speakers at support groups providing information and referral to military and their families.

USOHR Gala and Silent Auction -
The USO Annual Fundraising Gala and Silent Auction is a formal black tie affair and is the organization’s main fundraising tool. The evening consists of a silent auction, dinner, and live entertainment and is a special way to thank those who support the USO of Hampton Roads with their time and financial contributions throughout the year. Local, state and federal government officials, Flag and General officers and local businesses show support for the USO by attending this event.
